Trailer Watch: Chad Enters Oscar Race with Abortion Drama “Lingui, The Sacred Bonds”

A trailer has dropped for “Lingui, The Sacred Bonds”, Chad’s contribution to the best international feature film at the 2022 Oscars. The drama takes place on the outskirts of N’djamena, Chad’s capital, and tells the story of Amina ), a single mother, and Maria (Rihane Khalil Alio), her 15-year-old daughter. The couple is dealing with the fallout from Maria’s unwanted pregnancy. “I want to save her,” Amina says instead.

Expelled for being “bad” for her school’s “image”, Maria wants an abortion. Amina has been on this road before. She was also expelled for being pregnant. She was banished by her family, but she stays by her daughter’s side. “I do not want to be like you, mother. Everyone thinks you are a loose woman,” says Maria.

An abortion will not be easy to obtain. A doctor explains that the law forbids it and he risks jail time and losing his license if he performs the procedure.

“Lingui, The Sacred Bonds” hits theaters on February 4th.
