Cricket, Australia vs Pakistan tour 2022, squad, dates, schedule, terrorist attacks

Some Australian cricketers are reportedly in doubt about going on a historic tour of Pakistan in March.

Australia have not taken a team to Pakistan since 1998, when Mark Taylor was captain.

Late last year, Cricket Australia and the Pakistan Cricket Board enthusiastically announced plans to play a series in several formats there in March and April.

The tour is nearing completion of the planning phase, but the Sydney Morning Herald now reports that players are not considering leaving due to the risk of terrorist activity.

“We’re all toy about it,” the Herald quoted a “source close to the team.”

Terrorist activity in Pakistan has reportedly increased in recent months, and last week a bomb exploded in Lahore – where the Australian team would spend most of their trip – killing three people and wounding at least 28 others.

A report by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) showed that there were 294 attacks by “militants” in 2021 alone, which killed 395 people.

“Cricket Australia and the Pakistan Cricket Board continue to work closely together to plan the trip and are in regular contact with our respective governments,” it said in a statement this week.

“A constructive visit to Pakistan before the trip was carried out by representatives of the CA and the Australian Cricketers’ Association in December, with detailed planning and preparation for the trip underway.

“We continue to have regular and open discussions with our players and support staff about the comprehensive safety, biosecurity and operational arrangements for the trip.”

Australian pick George Bailey remains confident the trip will continue.

“The security sounds very, very robust and very, very thorough,” Bailey said.
