Boris Johnson withdraws the COVID-19 test requirements in the middle of the omicron climb

The Prime Minister said that such travelers do not need to isolate themselves until they get a negative PCR test according to the outlet. Instead, he said they should take a lateral flow test within two days and take a PCR test and only isolate if the rapid test is positive.

Johnson’s comments come as the UK Ministry of Health on Wednesday announced that it would no longer require people in the UK who test positive using a rapid flow test to reconfirm the result with a PCR test if they are asymptomatic from 11. January.

Johnson said in a speech to the British House of Commons that because of the “pure size” of the omicron wave, the government had to take steps to ensure that test capacity “reaches those who need it most”.

He added, however, that COVID-19 measures will remain in place in the country. He also said UK residents should take a COVID-19 test before going to high-risk settings or meeting the elderly or vulnerable.
