Unfortunately, these stories of content creators facing bigotry online are not new and speak to the larger conversation around the place of diversity in the industry. In a 2022 Games Developer Conference survey, nearly a quarter of developers said their studies had not focused any resources on diversity or inclusion initiatives within the past year. Referring these initiatives to the sidelines can have lasting consequences and signal not only to other developers, but to consumers playing their game, that they should not worry about this lack of representation. Game development and consumption are not isolated from each other. Ignoring representation issues in one part of the gaming ecosystem, whether developers or consumers, can resonate with the other. And if a game ends up being a hit, Gray explained, then the damage is amplified tenfold.
