Former striker Dimitar Berbatov believes Donny van de Beek “has never had the chance” to prove his worth in Manchester United colors.
Van de Beek got his first start of the season on Tuesday for United’s shock defeat of 2-1 in the Champions League to Young Boys on Tuesday, but was replaced at half-time, replaced by Raphael Varane, after Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s red card.
Van de Beek looked calm and composed on what was just his 16th start in United colors, but Solskjær was unable to give him a reasonable crack on the whip due to a required tactical shake, where the Reds switched to a back-three for the other 45 minutes.
Although he secured a rare start, Berbatov still does not think it was enough for the Dutchman to showcase his talents and qualities to those who saw.
“United midfielder Donny van de Beek is running out of time to save his United career,” Berbatov told Betfair. “He started against Young Boys, but was replaced at half-time.
“This has been the story of his time at the club. If he plays, he’s picked up. If he comes on, he gets ten minutes. He never gets the chance to settle down and show what he can do.
“It just does not work for Van de Beek. It’s a shame because United paid big money for him. But that’s what happens when you spend money just to please your fans.
“I still hope he gets a proper chance, but it will be very difficult for him and the club can decide to reduce their losses if they can.”
Since switching to Old Trafford last September, the central midfielder has collected 38 games for the Reds and scored just one goal.
