Lord Mayor backs Melbourne companies to be included in vaccine passport trials

Melbourne companies want to join the Victorian government’s attempt at vaccine passports.

The Andrews government has previously stated that the trial would take place in the Victoria region.

But CBD companies are pushing to be included in a ‘health pass’ trial.

The Night Time Economy Advisory Committee, made up of executives from the city’s hospitality, arts and entertainment venues, is fighting for the pilot program.

Melbourne city councilors will on Tuesday vote to lobby the state government to immediately roll out a vaccine passport scheme in some places in the CBD.

Lord Mayor Sally Capp says “it means that when we start reaching that 80 per cent target when we can really open up, our venues are ready to welcome people back on the dance floor and get this city going again”.

But the trial will only continue if the state government approves it.

“We need the state government to choose the city of Melbourne as a place where a trial can take place,” Councilor Capp told Neil Mitchell.

“We have been the hardest hit municipality in Australia as a result of this pandemic, and all our industry leaders and all the small business owners are saying ‘Let’s join a trial so we can open up faster and safer’. ”
