Volocopter collaborates with Urban Movement Labs in Los Angeles

Today, Volocopter, a pioneer in urban mobility (UAM), announced that it has entered into a partnership with Los Angeles-based Urban Movement Labs (UML) to investigate the application of Volocopter’s UAM solutions in the Los Angeles area. As part of Volocopter’s US campaign, the company will also be present at CoMotion LA from November 16 to 18, 2021 for the public to learn more about this new urban transportation.

UAM is a subcategory of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) that focuses on how advanced aircraft operate in and around cities. Today, Volocopter is developing its electric vertical take-off and landing craft (eVTOL) to provide commercial transportation services to passengers and goods — 100% electric and emission-free in-flight. This mobility service will be positioned to support existing transport options, introduce new local employment opportunities and provide point-to-point connections at cost equivalent to taxi fares.

“Our partnership with Urban Movement Labs is a great entry point into the United States with our innovative UAM services,” says Christian Bauer, Volocopter CCO. “By leading the conversation about urban mobility with broad stakeholders in Los Angeles, Volocopter can strategically identify and address how our services can benefit cities in the country. More importantly, we also gain real insight into living transportation ecosystems in the United States to build the best free service for other modes of transportation for our future passengers. ”

“Volocopter is one of the promising opportunities for urban urban mobility to add new layers of connectivity and travel opportunities for Angelenos,” he said. Clint Harper, Urban Air Mobility Fellow with Urban Movement Labs. “Their partnership with Urban Movement Labs shows that they are interested in learning how to improve the mobility experience for Angelenos through a shared vision. Partnerships like this are an important step in launching this innovative industry with community in mind. We are excited to share this journey with UAM trailers like the Volocopter. ”

“We are implementing a community-first strategy to engage with community-based organizations and inform a policy framework that will guide the development of UAM infrastructure in Los Angeles City,” said Sam Morrissey, CEO of Urban Movement Labs. “Through our partnership with Volocopter, we can explore specific pilot projects to promote a future UAM network that reflects what we hear from Angelenos and sets standards for future UAM operations.”

Volocopter’s family of aircraft for UAM services includes VoloCity air taxi for short intracity routes, VoloDrone for heavy goods transport and VoloConnect for longer routes between suburbs and the city center. The company is also developing physical and digital infrastructures (VoloPort and VoloIQ) to complement its multifunctional aviation portfolio and create scalable ecosystems for urban environments. Volocopter will launch its UAM services in the next 2-3 years after obtaining final certification from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). Simultaneous certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will enable Volocopter to bring its services to the United States shortly after.

The partnership between Volocopter and Urban Movement Labs will provide lessons to inform a policy framework that envisages UAM as a safe, sustainable and equitable multimodal transportation component in Los Angeles.

As the only eVTOL industrial player to have two strategic EASA certification approvals for designing and producing aircraft in-house, Volocopter brings certification leadership, ten years of experience and over 1,000 test flights to the table. The company most recently demonstrated its progress at the EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where Volocopter completed the first public flight of an occupied eVTOL in the United States.
