Join the Walk For Maggies in September to help people living with cancer – Saddleworth Independent

CANCER charity Maggie’s invites the public to join them to see Oldham in a whole new light as she raises vital funds to help people living with cancer.

Their Walk For Maggie’s Friday, September 24th is a five-mile night hike through the heart of Oldham with entertainment, food and drink along the way, culminating in a party.

Those who participate will raise significant funds to help Maggies provide free practical, emotional, and psychological support to people living with cancer.

After losing her father to cancer and her mother and sister being diagnosed in the last five years, Elaine Yates had the worst news imaginable when she was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time in December 2020.

She steps out on the Walk for Maggie’s to give back to the center that has helped her.

“Since January 2021, I have been having surgery and 12 weekly chemotherapy sessions that I can only describe as grueling and hard,” she said.

“I lost all my hair and gained a huge amount of weight through steroids. I am now on tablet chemotherapy until at least October.

“Fortunately, I am now in the next chapter, which is moving forward. I can not wait to get back to work.

“Thank you to all the single people who have been there for me. The amount of support messages I have had has been amazing.

“Many people we all know have been affected by cancer, and to raise money for a center that can help people is the least I can do.

“My amazing best friends are doing this trip with me (thank you ladies) and it would mean the world to us if you were able to donate even a small amount.”

Joining walkers at night will be Brazilian drummer Juba do Leão, ukulele band Barnhowlers and Rochdale-based Phoenix Brass.

Trish Morgan, Maggie’s Oldham Center Head, said: “We are delighted to welcome people to our Walk For Maggie event.

“It will be a real highlight of the year with a great warm, friendly and fun atmosphere, but more importantly, as we rely almost exclusively on voluntary donations, the funds raised will tremendously help us support people living with cancer.”

The entrance closes on Tuesday 21 September, but you can still sign up now at www.maggies.org/oldhamwalk
