French President Emmanuel Macron’s team is outraged by President Joe Biden’s announcement to share US and British nuclear submarine technology with Australia, breaking down an agreement that Australia must buy French vessels.
“The US choice to exclude a European ally and partner like France from a structured partnership with Australia at a time when we are facing unprecedented challenges in the Indo-Pacific … shows a lack of coherence that France can only note and regret, ”said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian and French Military Minister Florence Parly in a joint statement on Wednesday night.
Their protest threw a Parisian pallet over a deal that US observers hailed as a major strategic advance for Australia and a testament to the power of the US alliance network, contrary to China’s argument that the chaotic US withdrawal from Afghanistan heralds future failures in US support for allies. Yet Macron’s government sees the announcement as a breach of trust from Australia and a sign of disrespect from Biden, increasing the need for “strategic autonomy” from the United States.
“The deplorable decision … only reinforces the need to make the issue of European strategic autonomy high and clear,” French leaders said. “There is no other credible way to defend our interests and our values in the world, including in the Indo-Pacific.”
BIDEN Loses Europe’s confidence
Biden’s team cited Britain’s involvement in the trade as a mechanism to bring a transatlantic ally into the Indo – Pacific, while US officials try to deal with and deter threatening threats from China.
“These relations with Britain and Australia are time-tested – our oldest allies in general,” a senior official told reporters earlier Wednesday. “This is designed not only to strengthen our capabilities in the Indo-Pacific, but to connect Europe and especially the UK more closely with our strategic aspirations in the region as a whole … The UK is very focused on the concept of ‘global UK,’ and their inclination is about engaging much deeper in the Indo-Pacific, and this is a down payment on that effort. “
Biden extended an olive branch to France, the oldest ally in the United States, while the new agreement represented an example of London following Paris’ lead.
“This effort actually reflects a broader trend with key European countries playing an extremely important role in the Indo-Pacific,” Biden said. “France in particular already has a significant Indo-Pacific presence and is an important partner and ally in strengthening the region’s security and prosperity. The United States looks forward to working closely with France and other key countries as we move forward. ”

Still, the deal rules out a plan for Australia to buy $ 90 billion. With diesel-powered submarines from France.
“The world is a jungle. France has just been reminded of this bitter truth by the way the United States and Britain have stabbed her in the back in Australia, ”former French Ambassador to the United States Gerard Araud wrote on Twitter. “That’s life.”
