The Steelers may already be scoring a quarterback for next year’s draft. The Bengals have signed a former Steelers free agent. Raiders Maxx Crosby raised eyebrows with his performance Monday night against the Baltimore Ravens.
And we’re celebrating the birthday of a Pitt football legend. All this in the first call of the day.
Tar Heel by
Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert was at North Carolina’s football practice on Tuesday.
We know this because Tar Heels coach Mack Brown tweeted this photo out with Colbert.

It’s not certain who Colbert looked at, but it’s safe to assume the Steelers at least checked Sam Howell.
He is perceived by some as the best quarterback prospect in the NFL Draft next spring. But Howell has struggled a bit this season. He has been fired eight times and thrown three interceptions over the first two games.
In just over two seasons at Chapel Hill, Howell has thrown 72 touchdowns and 17 picks while completing 64.3% of his passes.
With Ben Roethlisberger’s status in the air and no single starter established long-term after he leaves, many are wondering if the Steelers will get splashed in the draft or in free agency this spring.
Back with the Bengals?
The Cincinnati Bengals signed a former Steeler before a Week 3 showdown between AFC North rivals.
Security Sean Davis’ first period with Pittsburgh lasted from 2016-19. He was picked up by Washington in March 2020, but was released in September. He then signed again with the Steelers and played last year in Pittsburgh before signing with the Indianapolis Colts in the spring.
He was released on August 31 and then locked on the team’s training team before becoming a free agent again on September 14. That was when the Bengals decided to scoop him up.
Davis, a sixth-year player from Maryland, has played in 65 career games and has 244 tackles, 2½ sacks, 21 delivered defenses, five interceptions, a forced fumble and a groping recovery.
Cincinnati moved safety Ricardo Allen to injured reserve due to injuries to hand and limbs during the Week 1 victory over Minnesota.
The first AFC defender of the week in 2021 was not TJ Watt or Cameron Heyward.
That is despite an excellent performance by both Steelers in a win over the Buffalo Bills.
Instead, the credit went to Las Vegas Raider Maxx Crosby. The defensive end had six tackles and two sacks along with numerous other snaps that led to haste and pressure from Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.
But the Raiders also got some bad news. Co-defender Gerald McCoy was placed on damaged reserve with a knee injury. Damion Square replaces him on the roster.
Great b-day for Dan
Legendary Pitt quarterback Dan Marino celebrated his birthday on Wednesday – his 60th birthday.
Wait, that’s impossible. If Marino is 60, then it makes me … old enough to have remarkable moments like this where time evaporates before my eyes.
And it would do this highlight practically old.
Happy birthday, Dan Marino!

But it still looks good, right?
