Drinkers at the pub in London quiz stunned when they realized Sir Ian McKellen was behind the bar

We Londoners definitely love a good pub quiz and you can probably find one every night of the week around town.

However, it is not uncommon for you to find yourself responding to a legend about the stage and screen.

That’s exactly what happened to the drinks at a local pub in Limehouse last night.

Sir Ian Mckellen, the star of The Lord of the Rings and countless other major films and stage productions, owns The Grapes along with actor Sean Mathias.

It is believed to be one of the oldest pubs in London with a 500 year old history. The discreet place has been there since 1583.

Now the local legend’s pub, like all good pubs, runs a weekly quiz night on Mondays.

This week, the LGBTQ + icon visited the pub for a visit and even took part in the quiz.

On a visit to the pub, he chatted away with drinkers.

Matt Kendall told MyLondon: “We talked to him a bit about the quiz … he was standing behind the bar looking at suggestions for questions the following week.”

Apparently, Sir Ian quite often drives past his pub.

“He asked us questions for the next quiz night, which he often runs himself,” Matt said.

Perhaps the Hamlet actor will use these suggestions next Monday and fulfill a ‘quiz champion’ title on his impressive CV.

Sir Ian’s The Grapes, is spread over two floors in a Victorian building located just on the banks of the north bank of the Thames.

Before the couple with actors (and former partners) bought the pub, the licensee was Barbara Haigh, who used to be a Playboy Bunny.

It’s worth a visit if you want a chance to see the star in action and it only costs £ 1.50 each to take part in the quiz.

You will find Sir Ian Mckellen’s pub, The Grapes, at 76 Narrow St, Limehouse, E14 8BP.
