A 7-year-old girl died Tuesday after a fire in a townhouse in Northwest DC, officials said.
The first respondents were called to the 700 block of Quebec Place NW around 3:10 p.m. They arrived four minutes later and firefighters went in to look for three missing children, DC Fire and EMS said.
Working smoke detectors and fire alarms had gotten almost everyone out of the house, but firefighters were told there was still a girl inside.
“These are very sad days where we lose a child by firing,” said Fire Chief John Donnelly.
It took crews about eight minutes to put out the fire, and two minutes later firefighters pulled the girl out of the house, Donnelly said.
They performed first aid and she was rushed to a hospital in critical condition. She later died of her injuries, Donnelly said.
Pictures show smoke flowing out of a second-floor window.
When crews arrived, they found significant fire on the second floor of the three-story home. No information was immediately released on the possible cause of the fire.
