Antoine Fuqua has entered into a first-look partnership with Netflix and continues her relationship with the studio after the successful drama The guilty with Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead role. The agreement will primarily focus on films and documentaries.
Fuqua also announced on Friday that his production company was renamed Hill District Media, from the former title Fuqua Films. The new name underscores his background and roots, which translates to his work on screen.
“Working with Netflix on The guilty was such a rewarding experience, both from an artistic and collaborative point of view, ”said Fuqua. “I’m very excited to continue this relationship and expand our range of films with a partner who shares our vision at Hill District Media.”
The deal comes after the strong reviews for The guilty, which premiered at this year’s Toronto Film Festival. Fuqua is currently recording Emancipation with Will Smith in the lead role and also recently completed the Amazon series The terminal list with Chris Pratt in the lead role.
“Antoine is an effective storyteller who believes that art can create meaningful change in the world,” said Tendo Nagenda, VP of Netflix Film. “We had a good collaboration with him about The guilty and look forward to telling many more stories together in the future. ”
Fuqua is represented by LBI Entertainment. Variety was the first to report news of the deal.
