TORONTO – The city of Toronto says it is on track to exceed its greenhouse gas emission reduction target.

The city says its greenhouse gas emissions in 2019 were 38 percent lower compared to 1990.

It has set a target of a 30 percent reduction in 2020, a 65 percent reduction in 2030 and a net zero emission in 2050.

The city says residential, commercial and industrial buildings account for 57 percent of its emissions, primarily due to the natural gas used to heat them.

Transportation is the second largest source of emissions at 36 percent, with petrol for vehicles the main greenhouse gases.

The city says it must quickly reduce its emissions if it hopes to reach its target by 2030.
