Students are fighting book bans that include Rosa Parks, Malala and Sesame Street

Students in York, Pa., Are fighting back against the school district’s book ban on race and history, which has come to include books about Rosa Parks, Sesame Street and the activity of Malala Yousafzai’s biography.

“I do not think a moral compass will let you ban books on equality and loving one another,” said Christina Ellis, a senior at Central York High School. CNN.

The ban originally arose in October last year when the all-white school board banned the above materials and many more indicated here which surrounds race, social justice and history.

A virtual school board meeting was held Monday so students, parents, faculties and members of the community could debate the study ban.

“This is a board that, after hearing their students’ concerns about district diversity, heard my struggle with race, being Native Americans, and consistently feeling I did not belong,” said Edha Gupta, a senior in high school. . “After all these conversations for weeks in pursuit, they were still pursuing the book ban.”

The ban has also had major consequences for school librarians and teachers, who say that on top of their moral objections to it, it also raises fears for their job security.

“Now, with this resource ban, I have to think twice about whether or not I should use a James Baldwin quote as an opening for my class,” said Central York High School teacher Ben Hodge.

“There are teachers who look over their shoulders and wonder if anyone will stand by their door and darken their door, say you said something, or you mentioned something or used something that you should not,” added co-teacher Patricia Jackson, who has worked in the school district for over 20 years.

However, the parents are still divided over the decision.

“I do not think a board that lacks diversity is the right authority to decide what qualifies as appropriate material to address race in this community,” said local parent Brandi Miller.

Parent Matt Weyant countered this perception, saying, “I do not want my daughter to grow up feeling guilty because she is white.”

During the virtual meeting, school officials stated that it has “frozen” the use of the materials so it could vet them; it has not banned them. However, the investigation process began close to a year ago and the school board approved a ban on materials.
