Although I have always considered myself a conservative, it is only in the past year that I became politically active. I was driven into political life by a genuine concern for those who are fighting and their understandable cynicism towards politicians. I chose to drive in Ottawa-Vanier, a unique and diverse part of our beautiful city, because of the challenges its residents face. In fact, this riding reflects the challenges that the entire country faces.

Recently, I was surprised to learn that a friend working at a safe injection site was a supporter of the Conservative Party. On the surface, this seemed to be a contradiction – a person dedicated to keeping addicts alive by facilitating the safe use of illicit drugs, is a conservative? My friend did not see it this way. Their jobs save lives and taxpayers’ money and keep community workers at the forefront of solving the city’s drug problem. I do not think governments can or should solve all problems. What governments can and must do is create a framework with communities and resource groups so that they can solve and solve their problems in ways that work best for them and achieve the necessary results.

Our party recognizes that our economic security depends on the mental health and well-being of Canadians and vice versa. We are committed to setting up a national three-digit suicide prevention hotline and expanding access to mental health and drug recovery programs. We have policies to provide security to workers in the concert economy and to lift working Canadians by doubling Canada Workers Benefit. We will provide working people with real help to ensure their continued participation in the workforce.

Small business owners are used to working hard and taking on the pressure of running a business. When the pandemic hit, government support programs for small businesses came too late, were inadequate and so complicated that many decided to abandon programs like CEWS and rental assistance. It is impossible to pass on the enormous psychological and financial pressure on business owners to pay rent, taxes and take care of their staff while trying to support their families. A Conservative government will support companies when they reopen and face new challenges, such as staff and debt. We have promised to restore the million jobs lost during the pandemic. We will introduce incentives to get Canadians to travel, eat and shop when the pandemic is safely behind us. These initiatives were created with input from business owners and industry experts to ensure that the actions support the intended areas of the market and are financially viable. Canada’s recovery plan sets out a series of actions that will benefit all Canadians.

Heidi Jensen is the Conservative Party’s candidate in Ottawa-Vanier.
