China is seeking to join the Pacific Trade Pact after the United States establishes a new security alliance

NEW YORK – China has formally applied to join a trade pact with 11 nations in Asia and the Pacific seeking to pull traditional U.S. allies into its economic trajectory as competition for alliances heats up between Beijing and Washington.

The announcement that China will seek to join a pact originally advocated by former President Barack Obama to counter China came a day after the Biden administration unveiled a new security partnership with Britain and Australia in the Indo-Pacific, en Beijing’s influence is growing in area.
