The Justice Department is asking the judge to prevent Texas from enforcing restrictive abortion laws

WASHINGTON – The Justice Department late Tuesday asked a federal judge to issue a ruling preventing Texas from passing a law banning almost all abortions and pushing a fight between the Biden administration and state Republican leaders.

The department argued in its application that Texas had passed the law, known as Senate Bill 8, “to prevent women from exercising their constitutional rights.”

As such, the department asked a federal district court judge to issue a temporary ban or a temporary injunction that would prohibit law enforcement.

“This facilitation is necessary to protect the constitutional rights of women in Texas and the sovereign interest of the United States,” the Department of Justice said in its brief.
