Mexican authorities rescue 22 foreigners kidnapped at a hotel

Mexican authorities on Tuesday rescued 22 foreigners, most of them Cuban and Haitians, who were kidnapped earlier in the day when gunmen stormed a hotel in central San Luis Potosi, the region’s state attorney general said.

Armed men also kidnapped 16 Mexicans as they searched the Sol y Luna Hotel in Matehuala, about 195 km north of the regional capital of San Luis Potosi.

The Mexicans were released earlier, but the foreign nationals had to be rescued in a remote area by the road between Matehuala and the regional capital, state Attorney General Arturo Garza Herrera said in a statement.

The foreigners had to be transferred to the city of San Luis Potosi to be fed and get medical attention. Garza’s office did not provide information about the rescue or whether any of the foreigners were injured.

While most of the rescued foreigners were Haitians and Cubans, there were previous reports that some Venezuelans were among them, Garza’s office said in a statement. Three minors and a pregnant woman were among them.

“I want to inform the Migration Institute so they can get involved as we do not know the migration status of these people,” Garza said.

Many migrants hoping to reach the United States face great danger along the way, with kidnappings, extortion, rape and even murder reported. Some are conscripted to work for drug cartels fighting drug trafficking.

In June, a human rights group reported that some 3,300 migrants stranded in Mexico since January have been kidnapped, raped, trafficked or assaulted because of a U.S. border policy.
